How to Pilot Electric APUs in a Small Fleet

By Polar Fox APU

Define the decision before the trial

A fleet pilot should answer a specific question: can the proposed setup support the operation’s parked comfort needs while meeting cost and service expectations? Agree on the evaluation period and success measures before installation.

Choose trucks and drivers whose routes represent the intended rollout. One easy route is not enough evidence for every truck in the fleet. Document parking duration, climate, charging opportunities and auxiliary loads.

Collect a consistent baseline

Record current idle hours, fuel use where measurable, service expenses and driver comfort feedback. Use the same definitions throughout the trial. Keep operational changes visible so they do not get mistaken for equipment effects.

Compare similar work and conditions where possible. A seasonal temperature change or different route can affect both comfort demand and costs. Label those differences instead of treating every before-and-after result as directly comparable.

Include driver and service feedback

Train drivers on controls, charging indicators and normal owner checks. Ask for a short repeatable report after parked periods, including charge readings, comfort and unusual messages.

Have maintenance staff record service time and support interactions. This captures the practical burden of ownership alongside energy costs. A fleet system needs to be understandable to both the people using it and the people maintaining it.

Build the rollout from measured results

Review equipment and installation costs with recurring expenses and driver outcomes. Identify which routes fit the tested configuration and which need another design. Avoid extrapolating one truck’s best night across the entire fleet.

Discuss a pilot scope with Polar Fox before ordering for multiple trucks. A documented trial creates a stronger purchasing decision and gives the installer useful information for a repeatable deployment.
