Winter Care for Truck Lithium Batteries

By Polar Fox APU

Separate charging from discharging

A battery can have different temperature limits for charging and for supplying power. Cold-weather advice that ignores this distinction can be misleading. Read the documentation for the exact installed model.

Lithium battery designs differ in their protection and heating features. Do not borrow a temperature cutoff from another brand. Ask the installer which cold-weather behavior is normal and what the driver should do when charging is restricted.

Confirm the system’s protection strategy

Ask whether the batteries have temperature monitoring, charge protection or an approved heating function. Learn what those protections look like on the display and whether additional steps are required before charging resumes.

Protection is not a reason to bypass instructions. If a warning appears, follow the approved procedure and contact support when needed. Do not defeat a management system or add improvised heating equipment to force charging.

Plan for parked trucks

For longer downtime, follow the manufacturer’s storage guidance for charge level, connected loads and periodic checks. A parked truck may still have small loads drawing energy. Identify those loads before leaving the vehicle unattended for an extended period.

If shore charging is part of the storage plan, confirm that the equipment supports the batteries and expected conditions. Also verify how an interrupted connection will be detected.

Keep winter information with the truck

Store the battery model, manual and support contact with your installation records. Give substitute drivers the operating instructions that affect charging and essential loads.

Ask Polar Fox to review your winter parking routine when specifying a setup. The right plan addresses both comfort requirements and the conditions under which the storage system can safely recharge.
