Look beyond the equipment price
A system price is only useful when you understand its scope. Two APU quotes can differ because one includes batteries, a charging solution and installation while the other lists only the cooling equipment. Start by requesting a written itemized quote.
Record the truck year, make, model and current electrical configuration. Tell the supplier whether you want cooling only, household power, shore charging or additional battery capacity. Clear requirements prevent a cheaper-looking proposal from hiding work you still need.
Check the installation line items
Ask about brackets, cab penetrations, wiring, protection devices, labor and commissioning. Shipping and any travel or overnight stay also belong in your purchase budget. If an existing system must be removed, include that work explicitly.
The lowest labor estimate may assume easy access or a truck configuration different from yours. Photos help the installer identify constraints before you arrive. Ask how changes discovered during installation will be quoted and approved.
Budget for ownership
Separate one-time expenses from recurring costs. Include the energy needed to recharge, required maintenance and any accessories you intend to add later. Ask which inspection tasks are owner responsibilities and which need professional service.
A warranty is also part of the comparison. Read the coverage for each component, the claim process and labor terms. Do not assume a battery warranty and a cooling-system warranty have the same duration or conditions.
Compare three useful totals
Create three rows: purchase and installation, expected annual operation, and planned future upgrades. Compare suppliers using the same scope in each row. This makes it easier to decide whether a higher initial investment solves more of your actual needs.
