BTU, Watts and Watt-Hours: Truck A/C Numbers Explained

By Polar Fox APU

BTU describes cooling capacity

Truck air-conditioning listings often describe cooling capacity in BTU per hour, shortened to BTU in marketing. This is a cooling-output measure. It does not tell you how much electrical power a unit consumes or how long a battery will last.

Compare cooling ratings alongside the space being cooled and the conditions behind the rating. A larger headline number does not automatically produce better comfort if airflow, installation or cab heat gain is the limiting factor.

Watts describe electrical power

Watts tell you the rate at which equipment uses electrical energy. A refrigerator, inverter and air conditioner may each contribute to the total. Some loads vary during operation, so peak power and average power answer different questions.

Peak demand matters for equipment compatibility. Average demand matters for energy planning. Ask for both where applicable, and avoid treating a cooling-capacity figure as an electrical-load figure. They describe different parts of the system.

Watt-hours describe stored energy

A watt-hour is a quantity of energy. In a simplified calculation, nominal volts multiplied by amp-hours gives nominal watt-hours. Hypothetical 12 V storage rated at 100 Ah is about 1,200 nominal Wh. Usable energy can be lower because of operating limits and losses.

This is why comparing amp-hours across different voltages can mislead. Compare usable energy at the system level, then account for the appliances and charging plan. Ask the supplier which voltage and capacity values its calculation uses.

Read the quote as a complete picture

Keep three columns in your comparison: cooling output, electrical demand and usable storage. Add notes about installation, charging and expected operating conditions. That table is more useful than choosing the biggest number in an advertisement.

For a Polar Fox proposal, ask the team to walk through these numbers using your truck and load list. A clear explanation should connect each specification to an actual comfort or power requirement.
